Create Drama with Available Light – Photography 101

Creating a dramatic photograph doesn’t always require expensive lighting equipment, it only requires you to visualize an image with the resource that you have available; one way to do this is to use the available light. Put your subject by a window and use the light coming through, depending on the weather you can create a variety of very dramatic photographs.

Melancholy Flower was created using the harsh afternoon sun. I opened the mini blinds to allow the sun to shine through the slates of the blinds in order to create the dramatic shadows of the blind slates as well as the bottle.

Droplets on Petals was created using a window as well. The day was cloudy and the light was diffused by the heavy clouds; this helped soften the light coming through the window.

Side lighting with available light is also a wonderful way to create dramatic portraits.
